April 26, 2007 Orioles 5, Red Sox 4 (12)

Nick Markakis plays hero twice, as the Orioles win in a thriller. The Orioles get two runs out of the gate off of Josh Beckett, eventually lead 3-1,and it looked like the lead would hold up until Mike Lowell's 2-run double ties the score at 3 in the top of the 8th. It would stay tied until the 10th, when an interesting managing decision I made looked like it would give the Sox the win.

Jason Varitek singled with two outs in the 10th. I thought about pinch-running, but I decided not to since Varitek was only at first. On a hunch, I had Varitek try to steal second, and he got the steal! Coco Crisp knocks Varitek in with a single, Sox take the lead 4-3. Papelbon comes in for the bottom of the 10th, game over. Or so I thought. A Melvin Mora single (the first hit given up by Paps so far this season), stolen base, and Markakis knocks Mora in with a single to tie the game back up at 4 for the first time as a hero.

Markakis then plays hero again in the bottom of the 12th with his fourth hit of the day, a single, to give the O's the walkoff win. You can read about the 12th in the box score.

Nick Markakis had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Baltimore Orioles topped the Boston
Red Sox in 12 innings by a score of 5 to 4 at Camden Yards.

The score was tied at 3 after nine. Baltimore won it in the 12th inning.
After an out was recorded, Corey Patterson drew a walk. Patterson stole
second with some aggressive base running. Brian Roberts then was walked
intentionally. Chris Gomez got his chance to keep things going, but he went
down on strikes. Markakis came to the plate and slapped a single resulting
in a mighty exciting win for Baltimore and the 40,991 home town fans in
attendance. Baltimore rapped out 11 hits for the night.

The victory went to John Parrish(1-1) who went 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Jonathan Papelbon(0-1) was the loser in relief. He gave up 2 runs and
2 hits in 2 and 1/3 innings.
