Youk singles, and Ortiz singles with Youk going to third and Papi to second on the throw to third. Manny rips a single to score Youk to make it 6-5. But then, Rivera bears down and strikes out JD Drew and Mike Lowell to preserve the win, denying the 4 for 4 (with 3 doubles) Coco Crisp a chance to go 5 for 5 in the game. |

Robinson Cano had 3 base hits as the New York (AL) Yankees defeated the Boston
Red Sox by a score of 6 to 5 at Fenway Park.
New York (AL) came up with all the runs they needed in the 5th inning scoring
6 runners on 7 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Jason Giambi who
deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he smacked a single scoring
two baserunners. Boston had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
The victory was credited to Jeff Karstens(1-0) who went 6 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 4 runs. Mariano Rivera was credited with his 4th save. Josh
Beckett(3-1) was the loser. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 3
walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Karstens, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'
