| Despite being outhit by the Nats 11-8, the Phils put their speed and defense to good use and a solid start by Jamie Moyer to get the win and split the two game mini series with the Nats. The Phillies ran roughshod on John Patterson with four steals, three of them by Shane Victorino. The big inning was the 3rd, when the first four batters reached base, all scoring. Victorino reached on an error by Ryan Zimmerman and stole second. Chase Utley was hit by a pitch, and he and Victorino pulled off the double steal for runners on second and third. Pat Burrell walked, and Greg Dobbs cleared the bases with a triple. Dobbs would score on a wild pitch by Patterson to make the score 4-0. Zimmerman would make up for the error with two solo homeruns in the 4th and 6th with a 5th inning Aaron Rowand homer squeezed in between to make the score 5-2. The Nats would get a run in the 9th when Tom Gordon would allow one of his inherited runners to score, and 5-3 is the final. The defense came into play in the early stages of the game. While the Nats were getting hits off of Moyer four doubleplays in the first 6 innings turned by the Phillies, all inning ending doubleplays, squelched all the rallies or the score could have been much different. |

In a close game the Philadelphia Phillies put 4 runs on the scoreboard in the
3rd inning and got by the Washington Nationals by the score of 5 to
3.
Philadelphia scored 4 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. The early run
support proved sufficient for Jamie Moyer(1-1) and Philadelphia. That was
all the run support Moyer required. Washington had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.
Tom Gordon earned the save, his 3rd. John Patterson(0-3) was tagged with the
loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 7 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 2/3
innings.
When questioned about the loss, Manny Acta said, 'The fans got to see an
exciting game out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it
done this time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the
smiles.'
